Selling books through ecrater.com

Hello readers. This is a new kind of blog that I'm doing today. I have been talking about selling books online. I decided to look at my options beyond where I've sold books before.

This is what happened. I was going to try some alternatives to Amazon and eBay. I started looking around and found out about shopzilla.com and pricegrabber.com. One of them, shopzilla.com, requires an e-commerce website. I started looking around and saw Vendio, which I have read about before. Then I did a Google search for a free ecommerce website and found ecrater.com. All of this was Sunday morning.

Today, Tuesday in the afternoon, I have my own storefront with a domain name I like. I will be selling books at myplanetbooks.ecrater.com.

The setup was easy. Since I already have Paypal, all that was needed was to register for Google checkout, which you only pay a small percent when you make a sale. In other words, people that buy books from me have an option of paying through Paypal or Google checkout.

I like ecrater.com. It is new, and it has potential. After I get some merchandise online (books I have and what I plan to get), I will start promoting my site. I will also blog about my experience there, and the items that I plan to sell.

Please stop by and leave some feedback, either in this blog, or at my website. You can decide if you want to create your own storefront too, using ecrater.com . Bye for now.

Tips for selling books online. Tips for selling books on Amazon or Half.com

Some of what I say here about selling on Amazon.com may also apply to selling books on Half.com.

Tips for selling books online. Tips for selling books on Amazon or Half.com

1. Get a hold of the books you already have
Selling books that you already have gives you an opportunity to test the waters before you start buying books to resell. This is how it works. Gather the books that you already own, if they are many write down their ISBN on a sheet of paper and then go to Amazon.com, or where ever you want to, and search for the book using the ISBN. You will see the price for the new one. In Amazon you can also see the prices that other sellers in Market Place are selling it for.

2. Decide if you want to Sell that Book
If you can make a profit (Amazon only charges if you sell, but besides the commission even though is only 15%, you have to pay an additional $2.19, as discussed in a previous blog . Again, you only pay that much if you sell the book. If you think you can get something back from the book, then go for it. In the case of books you already own, if you are not using them, and you can get some decent amount of money, I would say go for it.

3. Create a User Account
To list your items on Amazon, you need to create an account with them. Do so, it's pretty easy. You will have to provide a credit card number. Your creating an account to both buy and sell.

4. List your Item
On Amazon, you have to be sure that the item you are listing is one they already have listed. For example, when searching for your book's ISBN you will notice some details about the book, like Hardcover vs. Paperback, the edition of the book, etc. You want to make sure your items matches those details before listing. Also, it has to be the same ISBN.

5. Indicate the condition of the book
You have to say weather a book is New, Used or Collectible. Amazon has some guidelines on its website about describing the condition of the book. Make sure that when you list the item you say anything that can help the buyer, and be honest, like "there is underlining on some pages", "wear on the covers", etc. See what other people write on the comments line to get an idea.

6. Wait for the email that says "Your item has been sold, ship now"
Don't worry. You do not need to ship RIGHT NOW as the subject line of the email makes you believe. You have two or three business days to ship.

More later on how you will get paid for your item. They can do a direct deposit to your bank account. But I will discuss more on that, later.

Selling Books - Amazon.com vs. Half.com

Selling Books - Amazon.com vs. Half.com
Selling books on Amazon.com is easy and with the past success that I had I can recommend it. I will talk about half.com too. Half.com was bought by eBay and it is the way to sell books at a fixed price in eBay. According to their website, they reimburse you a portion of the shipping, and only charge 15% percent for selling the book. This is all if the book sells. If the book does not sell, you do not pay anything. This very similar to Amazon.

The difference is that Amazon charges, currently .99 cents plus a "closing cost", and for books that is $1.20. This comes out to $2.19, plus a 15% of the book price. You can see that selling very cheap books may not be profitable in Amazon.

However, people will buy more from Amazon than from Half.com. I've had books listed in Amazon and sold them pretty quickly. I have listed with Half.com, but had not had any success.

The other problem is getting customer service from Half.com. You have to send them an email. And I had bad experiences with them. With Amazon I can call them over the phone, there is a special number for sellers. Just call the main the number and ask them to connect you to the sellers customer's service. (By the way the main 800 number for Amazon, which they do not list on their website is... - see it on Wikipedia's article on Amazon, all the way at the bottom).

Has any body had any success with Half.com vs. Amazon, please leave your comments.

Selling books eBay vs. Amazon.com

This blog discusses my personal experience with eBay vs. Amazon.com

In a couple of months so far I've been able to make some money using eBay and Amazon.com.

Honestly, I prefer Amazon.com over eBay, because I like selling books. It is difficult to sell books on eBay and even on its half.com division. I have posted some books on Amazon and within a couple of weeks I have received a purchase. I have not received a purchase on half.com for books, nor on eBay.

Now, I realize that if a book is popular, it will sell on eBay/Half.com too. But most of the books I'm selling are books I owned at one time, so they may not be that popular (among the bestsellers).

I have been able to sell software on eBay, but then again, after listing 4 or 5 items and only selling one, it's kind of sad - why, because eBay will charge you a fee for listing, Amazon does not. eBay will let you list the item for 10 days max, Amazon lets you do this for 60 days, and you can re-list your item after this, manually, for free. Amazon only charges after you make your sale.

More on this topic later. Below are some books that I recommend to get you started on this business of selling online. I will be recommending more books in the next blog.
